Haiti...from Brian!

So….Steph has been trying to get me to write my first blog entry ever by sharing about my trip to Haiti.

Honestly, I have had a difficult time processing my recent trip. Since I have returned, life has been busy and I have had little time to sit and process/pray through my experience. Sharing about my time in Haiti has been challenging because I just don’t know how to sum it up in a nice little 5 minute blurb, but since the pressure is mounting for me write this, I will do my best :). So here goes:

I was talking with a college-aged guy a couple of weeks ago and he asked me to sum up my experience in three words. I think he was joking and did not expect a response, but I thought for about 15 seconds and said, “OK, if I had to describe the trip in three words it would be this…. ‘Exceeded My Expectations’.”

I did not know what to expect as I prepared to lead this group of 13 people, some of them I did not know well, into a country I knew very little about, to work with a group of people I had never met. Before we left I thought, “This could go either way; it could be great or it could be a bust.” I wasn’t sure which it would be, but I never thought it would be as great of a trip as it ended up being for me.

I loved my time in Haiti! These are some of the things I loved about the trip.

1) I absolutely loved the missionary couple (John and Beth Mchoul) that hosted us. John and Beth “Exceeded Our Expectations”. They served us and took care of us in ways I did not think were possible for missionaries who have so, so much work to give themselves to. They are both from Boston, have great Boston accents, and have been serving in Haiti for 20 years. They have been responsible for arranging over 300 adoptions! They were both hippies and former drug addicts who were radically saved during the Jesus Movement in the 1970’s. John is a pastor of a Pentecostal church in Port-Au-Prince and I absolutely loved getting to know him a bit.

I think one of my favorite things about the trip was getting to watch John and Beth live out God’s purposes for their lives amongst the poor, the widows, and the orphans of Haiti.  John’s example of being who God has called him to be was a real blessing and encouragement for me not be satisfied with anything else for my own life, but to fully embrace who called has called me to be, to the people that I live among. Here is a photo of our team...John is in the front.

2) I loved getting to see Haiti as we traveled 4 hours to and from a seaside village and back the second day we were there. While at this village we came face to face with “The Real Haiti.” The people of this village lived in such an overwhelming level of object poverty. Many of the children wore little or no clothing, were malnourished, and there were medical issues that our team doctor was not able to help. We de-wormed the kids in the village (meaning we gave them pills to kill the many worms that they have grown used to living with) and, though the worms will no doubt be back soon, it allows the children relief for a few weeks at least. We also handed out beef jerky and glow sticks and I was almost mugged to death as I tried to past them out. It was quite frustrating, but who can blame them. The best part of this trip was when we left the village to drive to the shore of the ocean, which was only about a quarter of a mile away. About 50 of the kids ran after us, or simply jumped on the back of the big truck and hitched a free ride. When we got to the ocean, some of the guys in our group got in, and the kids were not far behind them. Before long, our entire team was in the ocean with about 40 Haitian children, some with clothes, some without. The highlight of this time was the Chicken fights. We started out making sure the boys at least had underwear on before they were candidates for being put up on our shoulders to fight, but it wasn’t long before that rule went out the window. Here is a picture of us in action.

3) I loved working on the rooftop garden. Our group built 231 self-contained pots out of 5 gallon buckets that will help the ministry produce food to eat and sell. This was a huge project that we spent two full days on and we worked great together and had a ton of fun. Much of the time was spent listening to me and Ross talk about how we were working harder and more efficiently than anyone else, which wasn’t true at all but it made us feel good about our little system we had goingJ.

4) I loved getting to hold Renald! Renald is a three and a half year old who only weighs 14 pounds. His family lives up in the mountains and was not able to feed him so he was given to a rescue center. The center finds families that will help nourish children like Reynald for a short time, then give them back to their families when they are health enough to live. Renald was sweet and I held him as long as I could. The goal is to put 10 pounds on him and get him back to his family…these are the struggles in Haiti.

5) I loved the church service we went to while we were there. There was so much energy in the room and the set list for worship was 13 songs so we sang for well over an hour. I really enjoyed John’s sermon about self-interest as well. It was a wonderful meeting!

6) I loved being a part of meeting people medical needs. Though I did not contribute in any special way, we hosted a medical clinic the last day we were there and we met the needs of over 100 people. Included in this group, was a little boy who had pneumonia for a couple of weeks who would have probably died in a couple of days had his mom not brought him in. Our doctor treated him, and to everyone’s surprise, he seems to have fully recovered and is doing well! The miracle of medicine does save lives.

These were just a few of my experiences in Haiti. I could write so much more, but Steph as said I have already written the longest blog in history so I will wrap it up.

I want to go back to Haiti. I want to take Steph and introduce her to the people there. We are absolutely open to adopting one or two kids from Haiti but not sure what Jesus is saying about that yet. Either way, I think I will see more of Haiti in my lifetime, perhaps much more, and I am excited about that.

Thanks everyone for your support and your prayers as we went. I am so grateful for the opportunity and so thankful that Haiti….Exceeded My Expections!

I would rather...

So, before I write anything more...Brian went to Haiti.  He was able to lead a team from our church and it was a truly amazing trip.  But, I will not write any more about it.  He is going to write his first blog post coming soon!  So, look for it.

I just returned from a worship conference in Dallas.  It was really great.  I can't say enough about the kindness of the Lord towards me in some of the quiet moments during much of the singing and worship times.  But...I have to say, something that stood out to me over and over was my gratitude and thankfulness to be a wife and mom.  I was just so grateful about how the Lord has given and given and given and as I danced and saw my prego silhouette, I was just so humbled at how much I love the treasures of my children.

All of that to say...Tonight as I was bathing Jada and talking with her about the things that were on her mind like babies, animals, and bubbles, I teared up.  It was by far the sweetest "worship" moment of the week for me.  What I mean is that, the Lord's simple love and kindness was so rich and real.  I just wanted to say "thank you" over and over.  I realized that I would rather really live in each moment with Jada, Kiva (kicking me like crazy :)), and Brian.  Simply put...I am grateful.

Translation anyone...and brave girl!

Check out our brave girl.  The mall has this cool bungee chord jumpy thing set up and you only have to be 20lbs to do it!  She LOVED IT!  She was bouncing super high and the lady that was running it even flipped her.  All of this was accompanied by squeels of delight!

Something happened today...and here's Jada's version...if you think you may have the real story let me know...let's see who get's it close :)
"We were walking and then barbeque sauce fell from the ceiling onto Mommy's arm.  Mommy said "sick" and then Ms. Steph washed it off."
Translation anyone?

our dancer girl...almost- and lots of other news

We have had quite a week.  Jada was signed up for her first dance camp and she was SO excited.  We had been talking about it for weeks leading up to it.  She woke up Monday morning ready to put on her leotard, skirt and shoes...she couldn't wait!  When we arrived she was met with the loving "Aunt Suzanne" and of course was thrilled to see her.  But, when we went into the dance room there were lots of little 3 year olds very excited, it was a bit overwhelming for her.  No big deal, she got over it and sat in the circle to begin stretching with her friends.  I was of course among the other moms taking pics and tearing up at how precious our little ballerinas were.  Here are some pics to show you how cute the scene was...

Then, from no-where, the floodgates were opened and Jada began weeping as if she was caught in some strange form of ballet torture.  We talked and hugged and reasoned....but at 2 1/2 years of age, Jada just didn't want to begin her dance career!  Maybe her inner dancer will remain something that only comes out at home for another year, or maybe we can try again in the fall.
When asked how dance camp was, Jada will respond "not good...it's ok though."

MADYSON'S RECITAL!
We went to New Braunfels and visited Brian's family for a short trip to watch cousin Madyson perform in her recital.  She did great!  She totally knew her steps and was in the front and center...YAY Madyson!  We were all so proud of her.
BLAINE & SUZANNA
Also, we had a hang out day with some of our favorite kiddos...Blaine and Suzanna.  We all went swimming, ate bagel bites and snow cones and of course the girls blew bubbles while the boys played ball.  It was a great time together!  I love those twins!

GRAMMY'S VISIT
This weekend Grammy, Brian's mom, came in town to hang with Jada while we shot a wedding.  She was absolutely a Grammy's girl!  They had a blast just hanging together and playing.  We were so thankful to have a weekend with her too :)

OUR RANDOM PICTURE
The wedding we photographed this weekend took polaroids of all of the guests for their guest book (a new very fun wedding trend!)...and I took a pic of our polaroid for fun :)

THE MENNS VISIT
Our dear friends, the Menns, stopped in for a visit.  Cannon and Jada had a blast playing together and I loved seeing Hartlee growing so big!

KIVA NEWS
We had another ultrasound this week and everything is wonderful...and she is for sure a little girl.  She is super wiggly in my tummy now which I am really enjoying!  Isn't she cute :)

CRAFTS
Jada has been way into crafts lately.  We have been doing lots with glue, macaroni, glitter, markers, and stickers.  I will ask her what she wants to say and what pictures she wants...I do the glue and she does the glitter :)Here are some examples of our fun.
MOM AND MIKE
And news on my mom and Mike- their house finally sold in Spring/Woodlands!!!!  So they are officially free from two grueling house payments!  We are so grateful...and they are off vacationing this week in Florida with some old friends!

lots of fun around here!

Warning...be prepared for lots of squinty eyed cheezy smiles :)

I wanted to post some photos from the past two weeks of fun around here: we went to the Waco zoo again and met the Cole's there, Jada has a new elephant pool that she is addicted to, we are filling in our big pool and will actually have a backyard!, cousin Madyson came to play, Jada went golfing for the first time with her Daddy, we met some sweet friends for some fun at a neighborhood pool, a fun time picking on some good friends of ours and that was just in the past week and a half! So here goes...
Jada burying Toby in the rubber stuff at the zoo
I realize that this isnt the best pic...but how cute are these little people? Toby is seriously such a cute boy!
From left to right: Sarah Brown (our roomie and Jada's new bestie), Jada, Eli Cole, & Steph Cole

Jada's new elephant pool...yep, it is in our front yard since our backyard is being redone!
Jada pouring water on cousing Madyson's head :)...I love Madyon's expression in this pic!
Jada and Brian's first golf trip, along with Brian's good friend and co-worker Vinnie. FYI- Jada has turned into a daddy's girl over the past few weeks. She was brushing her teeth the other day, stopped, looked in the mirror and said to herself "I love my daddy" :)

Jada with the Fogles and Whites at the fun neighborhood pool for our lunch break
And last, but definitely not least: two of our good friend, Jared and Chester showed up at our small group matching last night. They have become roomies over the past few weeks and have decided to start matching their daily outfits (including shoes)...aren't they cute??

What's in a name???

You still on your toes?

To begin, Brian and I are SO happy about our daughter. Our prayers for her (before we knew it was a she :) have sounded a lot like "Lord, protect this baby...Lord, let this baby have a real unique call on his/her life...Lord, give this baby many, many days on this earth before being with you forever..."

So...our daughter's name has some significant meaning to us and a story behind that. Here goes:

Her first name is Kiva, pronounced "key-va" a Hebrew name which means "Protected by God"...we believe this has been prayed for, declared and believed by many about her. We believe that this protection will be a mark on her life throughout her days, not just in the womb but as she walks this earth. Of course, we have no idea what she will be like or the gifts God has given her...but we hope and believe that she will KNOW in her deepest places that God is for her and has/will protect her. This may make her bold, adventurous, a visionary...the possibilities are endless!

Her middle name has a story:

One day, a month or so after we lost Mia, I was about to leave the cemetery after spending some time there. I felt prompted to drive up to the older section that I had not seen before. As I was driving, the Upton song where he says over and over, "I know Victory, Victory is Yours...." was blasting in our Durango. I stopped by the older baby section. These babies lived for a day or two or some even up to a year...I was struck by one that was born the same year that I was ...1978. I was immediately struck by how that mother had grieved so many years ago. I wept a little while thinking about so many that had hurt in the same ways that I was. As the Upton song continued to play I couldn't help but be reminded of how then and now the Lord wins. He is NOT surprised by anything and how He will be glorified through suffering and joy....

I drove a little further into the old-old-old section of the cemetery...I got out of the car and left the door open still hearing the music continuing to play like a battle cry "I know Victory, Victory is Yours..."

Lots of odd shaped headstones stood before me, but I was drawn to a taller one that looked super old. When I approached it, the name read "Victorie Zak"....what? This person's name was "Victorie?" Literally I began crying and laughing at the same time out of a state of YES! The Lord was victorious then in the 1800's, now and forever! Death was truly swallowed up in VICTORY...Christ won 2000 years ago when he took death's sting away when He rose from the dead to give us all life, He won in the 1800's when "Victorie Zak" walked the earth, He is alive and winning people to him each moment today. He is Victorious! In that moment, in the absolute most obscure setting, I danced. I weep typing this. There was great freedom in that place. He really is the same yesterday, today and forever. When I shared this with Brian, we both agreed that if we have another daughter, we would really like give her this middle name...

So...her middle name? "Victorie"...We pray that her life would be the symbol of God's victory and goodness...and the endless other things that the word 'victory' might mean. So there you have it: Kiva Victorie Lee

On a bit of another note: Wednesday night during our small group singing time I was just so thankful to the Lord for the good report that we received that day: healthy little girl. My eyes were drawn to Mia's footprints that we have on our wall. I realized in a fresh way that if Mia were born in January into our family...we would not have been pregnant in February with Kiva. Please hear me right, I would love nothing more than to have our Mia here today...but the plans, sovereignty, knowledge and understanding of the Lord struck me deeply. Again, I said to the Lord, "I trust You."

Also, I took in the reality that those footprints on my wall represent a little girl who is free with Jesus now with no regret, remorse or envy. I really don't know how heaven works in relation to time...but I believe that Mia sees what is going on in our family and is really delighted about it and probably understands God's ways way better than any of us here.

Kiva has a unique purpose for her life that is totally separate than Jada's or Mia's and we are grateful and full of hope for our new little one. Thank you for rejoicing with us!

my ballerina mama...

Once again, I have to post about how fun Jada is and how much of a little girly-girl she is as well. Today we pulled out some recital costumes that I got for Jada when she was yet unborn :) and they fit. Oh my goodness...she was precious!!! She ran on her toes, spun around, did beautiful ballerina arms and then ran and jumped head first on the couch (and repeated this over and over).

After this, while still in her costume, she got her giraffe and wanted to go rock her giraffe to sleep. She is quite a little mama, you know.

Then after rocking her giraffe (aka:gigaffe) to sleep, she stood up, began twirling once again and tossed her giraffe into the wind while singing the butterfly song from the wiggles.

It was a fun day.

the little things...

Today was one of those hang out with Jada days that is just so nice and simple. I was thinking about how some of the little things are the sweetest...so here are a few little things that I love when Jada and I hang out:
  • she loves to color, paint, marker or play play-doh and she always wants to give her creations away...for example: "This one's for MiMi"

  • lately (as if you can't tell through photos) jada likes to say "cheese" and perform this crazy squinty smile. I love it. She laughs at herself everytime she does it...example from today :)

  • she loves to sing and will make up her own songs all of the time. Today it was to the tune "the wheels on the bus" and she was singing "the daddy on the bus says 'tickle-tickle-tickle' all through the town."

  • she still likes elmo a lot...we don't really watch him anymore, but she likes him a lot. Her favorite towel is her Elmo towel and she used to streak through the house running with it hanging on her head like a cape after e/bath. Here is a non-streaking photo of jada-elmo.

  • she really likes her set of princess shoes and thinks that they need to match her outfit...she also likes my zebra slippers that Aunt Dawn and Sue got me for christmas...she thinks those are mommies princess shoes. :) You know you love them .....

  • this is a very short list of fun things...but thought it would be fun to write!
